The name of the Egyptian city seems to be the Greek form of the Egyptian "Men-nefer", which all sources agree was originally the name of the site of the pyramid complex of Pharaoah Pepi I, and which may have meant "established and beautiful" in the ancient Egyptian language:

Memphis probably derives either from the name of the Tennessee city or the ancient Egyptian capital (as it was called by the Greeks). Neither strike me as great namesakes.
