I actually find myself really liking it ... on a boy. Too severe for a girl.
When I was way, way younger, Brer (like Brer Rabbit) was my nickname from one of my best friends, so it's really not a reach for me to imagine Briar on a boy.
Actually I find it rather seductive sounding.

I like it as a male or female, but Iknow a really cool little boy named Briar, so I'll have to go with male.
I don't think it'stoo severe for a girl... I mostly like it on a girl because it isn't 'soft' or anything.
I like Briar Luke, Briar Lucas, Briar Osiris, Briar Darwin, Briar Augustus, Briar Griffin, Briar Gryphon, Briar James, Briar Patrek (random odd spelling of the day), and Briar Haytham.
I don't think it'stoo severe for a girl... I mostly like it on a girl because it isn't 'soft' or anything.

It's female, but I dislike it for females. A briar is a thorny bush. The only reason it ever worked is because it was paired with Rose.

Just Briar with no Rose ... it'd seem frumpy on most women (not all). I wouldn't want to be named Briar. "Briar Rose" for a real person seems schmaltzy to me though.
On a male... well, if I didn't already think of it as a female name, I'd be strongly in favor. I like names for guys that refer to natural objects but that don't have passive or "tender" connotations, and the sound of Briar is kind of growly so I think it seems plenty masculine.

Other thoughts? cool nature name you don't hear very often. Expect to have it mistakenly said Brian, often.

Hmmm I see it as a very tomboyish female name. But I think female for sure - the association with the princess "Briar Rose" is pretty strong in my mind.
I far prefer Bryony, which I enjoy the look of much more, but Briar would be fun to see on a person. It's a very strong-looking name.
I would give it a 6 for a female. Same for a male, I think.
The more I think of a boy Briar, the more appealing it is, but I would fear that he would be mistaken for a "Brian" quite often, and I dislike that name so strongly that it would cancel out the option of using Briar for me. I would be more inclined to use the similar-sounding Pryor for a boy.
