[Opinions] Hagar
Replies
All I see is Hag. Sounds like a witch's name, like Hagar on the old Voltron cartoon.
I think the same as the first impression. Lumpy, lurching, boulders. It sounds untidy, brutal, and and viking-ish. I can't see and deep quality to it.
I love how it looks...it's intriguing. But I like it pronounced "Ha-gahr" rather than "hagger" because that sounds like haggard. And that's not very nice. (To me, at least.)
EDIT: Lol. Well, okay. I looked at the pronunciation. I like what I see.

I must admit that I like it as a GP.
I also think of Hagar the Horrible, and Viking hammers connecting with lumpy heads! - but if I stop thinking of him and listen to the sound, it's actually not too bad at all. I just checked and it seems to have been reasonably well-used in Victorian England - lots of Hagar Elizas, Hagar Louisas and Hagar Anns. I think it could grow on me if I met one, but the cartoon has probably knocked that on the head with a big Viking hammer for a good while yet.
I'f I'm completely honest, I hate it. It sounds horrible.
The "Hagar the Horrible" association is all I can think of too, although without it I could see what you're saying. I don't like the AY sound though; I keep wanting to make the HA part rhyme with the 'ha' in 'hat'.
I hate the sound, and it sounds so unfeminine to my ears. It doesn't really appeal to me at all - lumpy and lurching is a good way to describe it!
All I can think of is Hagar the Horrible. So I think of a disgusting, overweight, stupid Viking.
Even if it weren't for that, I believe I would think it a pretty unattractive name.

Yes, I wondered about the comic connection and how strong it was... is Hagar the Horrible supposed to be said "HAY-gar" or "Hagger"?
I think it's "HAY-gar".
