I hadn't heard that before. This story interested me, so I looked it up. I'm surprised at the decision that the Virginia council made. They seem to be very forward thinking. I expected that if they couldn't come to a decision on gender they would just banish Thomas/Thomasine from their colony, but it seems they accepted him/her fairly well. I wonder if there are any earlier documented cases of transgendered individuals.
