I adore this name, and it would have been the name of my son if my husband hadn't insisted on having a say. ;) I even had high hopes to name the cat Timothy, but once again fate didn't cooperate. She became Hermione.

I think Timothy is smooth and manly with a core of gentleness, and Tim is one of those great all-purpose nicknames like Mike, Cal, or Nate. It seems so versatile--need someone to hit a homer? rescue a kitten? perform surgery? write a screenplay? Tim/Timothy's your man.

DH, on the other hand, says Timothy is a "dirty old man" name, a pervy geezer with tufts of ear hair who smells like BenGay and likes to poke at girls with his cane just to hear them squeal. So, I guess this is one of those names where your mileage may vary.

I like Timothy. I think it needs an uncommon elegant middle name.

I think it's too cutesy and won't age well.

I know an excellent Timothy who always goes by Tim; in the past I've also known a pretty dire one. There was a silly pop song long ago about a boy named Timothy which put the whole of South Africa off the name (quite literally in the case of a woman I knew who'd been planning on naming her son Timothy but couldn't face it in the end and opted for Richard instead).

Timothy, Gregory, Anthony, Jeremy. They have been said to sound girly, presumably because of Dorothy, Cecily, Emily ... of the four, I prefer Gregory, then Timothy, then Anthony pretty far behind and Jeremy nowhere. Timothy's OK; no better.

I love Timothy! It is so sweet on a little boy and very handsome on a man!
