Looks like Eirik is staying on my GP list. :-)

Well, seeing Eirik in print on this board, I wondered if it was a variant of Erik. If I saw it in a local U.S. newspaper's birth announcement, I would probably still wonder that, but also would think the parents might have chosen this spelling to cause a different pronunciation.

Just based on phonetics alone, I would probably read Eirik with the first syllable sounding like "eye". Some words with "ei" are pronounced with a long "a" sound, like "reign", but the long "i", like "height" is what strikes me first.

No! Erik and Eirik aren't pronounced the same. Eirik is pronounced ay-rik and that's the way I would pronounce it in English.

I'd say Eirik with a more German accent, but pretty much the same in English.

I'd probably say EE-rik for Eirik. I don't like that spelling, I think's kind of stilted visually, adding the i to the first part makes it seem uneven which would bother me. That said I have a brother Aric prn just like Eric or Erik and that's probably much stranger and more difficult to recognize.

I would say Eirik like Eye + rick. It's cool but not the same name to me. It reminds me a little bit of Eivind, the name of a norwegian kid at a camp I went to, only because of norway + ei though.

Since I don't know how to pronounce Eirik properly, I'd probably pronounce it like Erik.

I wouldn't prn them the same. I know a lot of Erik's (and one Eric too), but only one Eirik.
I prefer Erik.
