I saw this name in a book I am reading and was wondering what it means. I know it's Japanese and believe it is a male name, but I can't seem to find it's meaning anywhere.

According to information I have from Claudia Segger, an expert on Japanese names, Masao usually means "correct male". However, most Japanese names have multiple possible meanings depending on what kanji characters they are written in.

¹’j means prosperous male
’j means political male
^’j means genuine male
«’j means military male
'O' in 'Masao' is written as •v, —Y, ˜Y etc. It means male anyway. Such names as end with 'o' sound generally old-fashioned nowadays.
