I was very surprised to see that this name is Indian in origin. I just finished the book "Cane River," by Lalita Tademy. It is the story of her African-American and Creole ancestors. Hmmm. Maybe her parents just liked the sound of Lalita.

I suppose it could be mistaken for Lolita, although I hadn't even thought of that when I encountered it in the author's name.
