One of the girls at school is named Hummingbird.
Well, what do you think? Sweet and whimsical, or totally stupid?
I'm caught somewhere in the middle. I appreciate the fact that it's unique, but it sounds TOO unique.

I love hummingbirds, but Hummingbird as a name is ridiculous.

I read a blogger who, when housework gets in the way of her life, describes herself as zooming around like a 300-lb hummingbird. So I'm afraid my associations aren't very respectful!
If one actually wanted to use it - totem animal or something - I'd expect that a brisk flip through a good bird book should provide a few pretty decent alternatives among the scientific names for various hummingbird varieties. Like using Dorcas instead of Antelope.

I don't really feel comfortable calling it 'stupid', but if my name were Hummingbird, I would be extremely embarrassed.

It's cute, but too cute for me. I think it would be difficult for most adult women to be named Hummingbird. It's interesting though. I wouldn't have thought to use it as a first name.

Both :P I'd never use it for a real kid, but I'd totally use it on a cat. And it is pretty cool, even if it seems unusable... Does she go by Bird or something?

It's cute as a GP, mn at most. "Humming-" as a fn just seems weird to me.
But I appreciate that they spelled it correctly. Imagine if she were Houghmyngbyrd!

I think, I am in exactly the same place as you are. Automatically, I think of the gorgeous green color of it's breast... But..... yeah.. I'm stuck. Do they call her Bird or Birdie? I wouldn't want to be called Hummer or Hum-dinger...

I know a Bernadette called Birdy (she's about 3 years old). I think it's an adorable nn!

The only Birdie I ever knew was massively, morbidly obese. It seemed incongruous, given that birds are generally perceived as small, delicate creatures. Then again, perhaps not so incongruous, given that we've all probably heard that the phrase "eats like a bird" is inaccurate since birds actually eat a massive amount compared to their body weight.
Well, Birdie was a nickname and her name was actually Thessalonia. I quite like Thessalonia, much more than Birdie. It seems to fit a morbidly obese person better, also.

Poor Birdie. Perhaps her soul / personality was / is bird-like. Thessalonia as a name rocks, for anyone.

Well, a Loon is a bird.... make a whooping sort of song... Don't know if I would use that one as a name though. I'll stick with Bridie, Birdie and Birdella, thanks!
