I'm actually surprised that Karen hasn't made a comeback with the 'en' ending.

I agree...I think that Karen was "ahead of its time" in general name fashions because of the "K" initial, the ending like you mentioned, and lends easily to spelling variations (e.g. Karin, Caryn, etc.).
