I just met one today and mispronounced his name.
How would you pronounce it?

I prnounce Malachy and Malachi differently.
Malachy has a long "e" sound on the end, whereas Malachi ends with a long "i" sound.
Malachy has been a top four boy's name for me for a long time. Being Irish-American, I prefer it to Malachi. But I love the biblcal, mysterious Malachi as well.
(ETA) For your Gaelic brood, Malachy (nn Mal? Mac / Mack?) would fit in beautifully.

What about Malakai? I don't know whether most of you consider it a legit spelling of Malachi or not. I'm guessing not, but I love Kai, and this provides the most logical way to use Kai as a nickame. Of course it could still be used with the traditional spelling, but I kind of like this one. And I think Kai fits really well with Aiden, Finn, and Calla.

A woman I know named her ds Malachi. But in the e-mail announcement, a mutual friend guessed at the spelling and wrote it as Malakai. I must admit I was relieved when I found out it was really Malachi.
Malakai reminded me too much of the Hawaiian island of Molokai. It's a gorgeous place and a lovely association, but it interfered with the Biblical fun I was having thinking about my friend's naming style (Hadassah and Malachi).

I agree about Kai, although I don't really like Malakai and if it was going to be short for Malachi I'd prefer Chi, Chai, or Cai.

I'm familiar with MA la kie for the biblical character and ma LAK ee when pronounced by some Irish people I've known. I prefer ma LAK ee, but not enough to use it.

Not the same name. Malachy is -kee and Malachi is -kie (long I). I know there's been some discrepancies here on how the ending of Malachi is pronounced, but I've never ever heard it with an -ee sound, and it doesn't make sense since it's a Hebrew name. I'm really sensitive about that because I LOVE Malachy (and thus feel a bit possessive of it!) and HATE Malachi. But off the soapbox. :P

I'm glad I'm not the only one to love Malachy and dislike Malachi, especially considering how similar they are in sound and spelling.

Really? Awesome! I've always tried to say Malachy with a "kee" but I thought it was supposed to be "kie". My intuition was right all along! Ha!

ouch, calm down. I don't know how he spelled it, he pronounced it -kee and said it was from the Irish name MAELEACHLAINN so I'm assuming he spelled it Malachy, but the BtN site doesn't have a pn for that spelling so I couldn't tell how to prounounce it. And I'd never heard the -kee pn so didn't realise until I came and checked on here that they were two different names.

They are both differnt names and because veryone knows Malachi more, they just assume they are the same.
I don't think either of them go with Aidan, Finn and Calla as the three of those names are more popular names and Malachy and Malachi would stick out like a sore thumb!

I think Malachy would go with Aidan, Finn, and Calla - it has that Irish flair to it that Aidan and Finn have. Malachi seems more Biblical to me and doesn't seem like it would fit as well.

I really don't like the name myself. It just sounds evil, with the "mal" beforehand (which means evil in a few languages), and the hard "k". Plus, I'm reminded of the lead evil kid in the movie Children of the Corn, which terrified me as a child.
Also, I think it stands out in a sibset combo with Aidan, Finn, and Calla. Those names are short and sweet and Malachai sounds like the red-headed step-child of the combo.

Depends on the person's background - for most Americans and English, I'd go with the Anglo'd Mal-a-kie, whereas if it was a Scot or Jewish/Noachide, I'd go with original mal-a-Kee (which is how I prefer to pronounce it).
I think it's a lovely name (though my favourite Mal name is Malkiel) and I think either would go very well with the other names (though I think Malachy with the -kee pronunciation fits in better).

I'd say MAL-uh-ky (MAL as in Malcolm and ky as in Kyle).
I like Malachi. I'm not as big on Malachy; I always want to say mal-A-kee or something...

I pronounce them differently. Malachy ends with a kee sound and Malachi to end with a kai sound.
I love both names a lot. I would use Malachy as a mn and Malachi as a potential fn (I really like the nn Kai)
