[Opinions] Adolphus
I confess: This name is growing on me.I would never use it, since I don't plan on having kids, but the sound of it is dynamic and old-world, two qualities in a name I'm very drawn to.WDYT of Adolphus? Which middle names would you pair it with? Can you think of any good two middle-name combos? I've recently started toying with them.Gracias. :)

Oh, wow. Adolphus. I fell in love with it while watching an old movie version of the George Bernard Shaw play, "Major Barbara." A very young Rex Harrison was playing the male lead, Adolphus. His nn was Dolly. Too cute.I don't suggest it because (a) I didn't think anyone else would like it and (b) it's got Adolph in there. Adolph, as much as I love it as a name, it now taboo. :-( So the question in my mind becomes: is Adolphus far enough removed from Adolph? I go back and forth.I placate myself with Alphonsus, but I really do miss Adolphus.Combos? Wow. That's hard. How about:Adolphus Menjou (just kidding)
Adolphus Henry
Adolphus Leopold
Adolphus Noel
Adolphus Hector
Adolphus Max
Adolphus Kim
Adolphus Kit
Adolphus Eugene
Adolphus Prosper
Adolphus Benedict
Adolphus Oberon
Adolphus Constantine
Adolphus Melchior

OK. Adolphus Leopold Rex and Adolphus Edward Phineas look usable to me. I've been hanging out here at BtN too long. Stellar list!

The actual sound of the name is OK, although I find -us names to sound a little bit strange (they just sound like a fictional Roman emperor or something).Obviously it's unusuable in real life as it's so close to Adolf, and it's hard to be impartial about other aspects of the name.

I like it. It sounds very American to me. Heavy and elegant. I feel like it would be better as a middle name since Adolf names obviously have a lot of baggage. But I don't think the connection is overwhelming.
I am really throwing things together here since Adolphus is hard for me to pair.
Adolphus James Endymion
Adolphus Benjamin Franklin (I can't help it...)
Adolphus John Valentin
Adolphus Abram Orfeo
Alois Adolphus Valentin
Adolphus Edward Dietrich
Frank Adolphus Prosper
Adolphus Emmerich George
Henry Adolphus Prosper
Adolphus Theodore Vartan
Adolphus Henry ViorelI like Ernest Adolphus and Henry Adolphus the best.

I would probably love this name too if it weren't for the Adolf associations. I would never do that to a kid, but you're right about the old world charm. I'm tying to think of middle names but I'm coming up with more names that IT could be a middle name for. I like the sound of Theo Adolphus.

I can't get behind it. One of my least favorite teachers would quote this line from Huck Finn, "my servant Adolphus!"

Any form of Adolf is pretty much ruined. Sorry.
