I think maybe you mean you don't like the -RL sound? I think the -RL does sort of get up your nose if you say it lightly. If
Merle was a masculine name like
Carl, though, I might be inclined to say it more firmly and keep the L down. I think this might be why (on topic) I prefer
Merle as a male name, and
Meryl or
Muriel for females.
