I knew about Rasputin, but I honestly didn't even consider him when asking this question! I feel so embarrassed now. Yeah, definitely not the kind of guy I'd admire and want to name my kid after. Pretty name, though.

I totally understand.
Everyone has made posts they're embarrassed about. A few years ago I thought Ilyich was a given name and Ilya was the diminutive. I was really embarrassed when I found out that Ilyich actually meant "son of Ilya". :-)

I can't let you go away without a consolation prize. There must be other names with the charm of Rasputina that doesn't carry the same bizarre baggage. How about:
Praskovia ("pras-KO-vee-uh")(nn Coco?)(see: Praskoviya)

Zinaida
Ruxandra / Roxelana ("rook-SAHN-druh," with "rook-" rhyming with book / took / look)(nn Ruxy?)

Eudoxia (if only a Doxy wasn't an old slang term for a prostitute . . . )
