The world Gareth and Sophie live in is rife with magic. It's as respectable a profession as shopkeeper. Even the smallest villages can boast a witch or wizard, and though magic is innate it is like singing ability: it must be trained, and even the best natural talent cannot be fully realized without a good teacher. Curses are considered crimes and are punishable by law; vampirism, zombification, monster-ism are all results of common curse-crimes. Lycanthropy is an unfortunate magical disease, only curable by a powerful sorcerer-healer. Sophie and Gareth live in the small city of Linley-Upon-Harn, a busy market town along the Harn River, an important trading route in their kingdom. Gareth owns a manor on the moor above the town, and Sophie now lives with him after growing up in the nearby town. The general feel of the world is turn-of-the-twentieth century America/Europe.
Sophie is a tailor's daughter who grew up not really aware of her magical ability in Linley-Upon-Harn. She is the middle of three daughters, with an older sister (Emma Isabelle) and a younger one (Lucy Olivia). She expected to have a boring life, as everyone knows it's youngest children who have the adventures. She is therefore a very capable young woman, able to sew and cook and very studious and intelligent, and very pretty with dark hair and sparkling blue eyes, a rosy complexion, and high wide cheekbones. She is also funny, with a sonewhat dry sense of humor, generous, and open-hearted. Gareth was trained from the age of thirteen in his wizardry, and has cultivated a specific reputation since the age of sixteen: that of a lazy, unmotivated, libertine wizard, good for nothing and generally undesireable. He cultivated this reputation as part of a specific ploy to avoid appointment into any official position, as that is the surest way to find your magic used for only the most boring of purposes. Gareth is really a very powerful and talented young wizard, quite intelligent and kind. He is very handsome, black-haired and grey-eyed with a flair for dress and a wolfishly handsome face.
Gareth and Sophie had a whirlwind romance that began when Sophie was cursed by a rival of Gareth's, another (evil) witch, and assigned to steal a powerful charm from him or live as a moth for the rest of her life. Sophie convinced Gareth to hire her on as a personal seamstress, and she then began to look for the charm. Gareth detected the magic in her at once and allowed her in, not suspecting at first what she was up to. Sophie quickly became friends with Gareth's young orphaned nephew Andrew and his friend/servant Rollo. They quickly formed a sort of family, and by the time Sophie found the charm, she had decided to tell Gareth everything as she had come to fall in love with him. Gareth was very understanding and helped her outwit the evil witch, and she and he decided to marry.
