What do you think of Clarissa? Do you think it's too frilly and girly? Ever met one? I think my frilly phase is coming back :P First Annabella and now Clarissa. Opinions?

My mom's name was Clarisse. (Clarisse Gabrielle). When she was in her 20's and started learning English, she shifted it to Claire, which was what everyone except her brothers and sisters called her from that point on. The family still used Clarisse. When she was in her 60's she moved to Florida where 2 of her sisters were living, and got into a huge tiff with one of them, who insisted on introducing her as Clarissa, "because it sounded classier." My mom was probably the least pretentious person I've ever known, and Claire suited her to a tea. I'm of the school that hates the issa names, guess I'm a chip off the old block.

I think it's pretty. A little dated, but not to the point where I'd say not to use it. Phoebe Clarissa is pretty. I'd suggest Clarissa Margaret.
I find Annabella over-the-top. It reminds me of antebellum, and portobello mushrooms. I am NOT a mushroom person.

I work with a Clarissa who is probably in her mid- to late-twenties. I knew several when I was growing up, too, who would all be in their thirties now.
I don't get a super frilly/girly vibe from Clarissa, the way I do from names like Annabella and Liliana. If anything, Clarissa feels dated and kind of like a "mom" name. It's probably my age; I grew up at a time when that "issa" sound was really common. I couldn't begin to count the number of Melissas I knew when I was growing up. There were also lots of Marissas, a couple Larissas and Clarissas, and at least one Anissa and Carissa. Just a few years behind us was an army of Alyssas, Alissas, Elissas, and the like. And, of course, I remember "Clarissa Explains it All," played by a Melissa who is now a mom, her frilly/girlish self long outgrown. I think of "issa" as an older, unfashionable sound while "ella" and "anna/ana" are very young and today. Hmmm. I haven't thought about this before.
My favorite from your combos is the wintery Holly Clarissa, but I like Phoebe Clarissa, too. Clarissa Belle is too close to "clear as a bell" for me.

I actually don't mind Clarissa. I think because I'm ok with what she is - super frilly, light, and OTT. I know lots of people don't like that about her, but she wears it well. That's just who she is. I think she at least has more depth to her than Tiffany or Brittany, in terms of bubble-gum pink princess names.
I like Phoebe Clarissa, but you know, Clarissa is just SO floofy, why not just embrace the fluff and go whole-hog romantic taffeta-sparkle with her? Let her OWN her tutu wearin', french poodle walkin', nose powderin', rosy-cheeked energy:

Hmmm... I don't think of super-frilly... image that comes to my mind would be more African American... Steppin'... college girl... Goes well w/ Coretta and some of the other names you'd find in that culture...

LOL. I think of that show as well, but it doesn't bother me. I still like the sound of the name.
Out of your combos, I like Phoebe Clarissa and Holly Clarissa. Belle has always sounded too cutesy and fussy to me, and with an ultra feminine like Clarissa, it's definitely too much. I prefer Clarissa Nell/Nelle. It's more sturdy sounding.

Exactly. As a child of the 90s, I can't shake the Clarissa Explains It All association. I don't think I would use it anyway because I don't care for -issa names.

Clarissa Explains it All.... any kid of the 90's (at least in the States) will think of that.
But I do like it and I've never met one - which is probably why I like it. I don't see it as frilly, as I dislike frilly, and now I'm second guessing myself. It's feminine, yes. And it ends in -a which I find hard-to-enjoy and makes it seem a little frilly I guess. But overall, Annabella is MUCH more frilly than Clarissa. Even Annabelle is up there past Clarissa in my opinion.
