I don't think it's possible to watch too much West Side Story. :P
I don't think Riff needs a full name that sounds close (although Richard was the first I thought of... or Griffin?). In the 50s they gave those sorts of unrelated nicknames like that.
As for guitar riff, I think if you like electric guitars then it would be a plus. I'm a classical music type person, so it's a neutral association for me. Although it also makes me think of "Piano Riff Woo" from Family Guy. Hahaha!
