[Opinions] Hal?
I keep floating back to this name in my head. Is it not enough as a full name? I am usually a fan of simple names that have simple NN's.
Any thoughts about the name in general? Can you think of a long name that can be shortened to Hal?

Hallam?
I think it's okay. It's something that could grow on me. It does make me think of the doofy dad in Malcom in the Middle, though.
My great-grandfather was Harry nn Hal. It could be short for any Har- name though.

Well, Henry, or Harold, or maybe Harley?
But really, all I can think of is the computer that goes berserk in 2001: A Space Odyssey.

I actually like Hal as a full name. I probably wouldn't use it, but I think it has a very easy, boy-next-door feeling. I've also met an awesome Hal who's probably influenced my opinion of it.
It just reminds me of the movie Shallow Hal...

Makes me think of American actor Hal Holbrook (whose full name is Harold Rowe Holbrook) and the character Hal in the animated film "Megamind". The former is a good association (because I like the actor), the latter not so much (because the character is plain and later in the film also evil).
Other names that Hal can be short for (other than the ones that were already suggested by previous posters:
Halbert (see Submitted Names Database)
Haldir (see Submitted Names Database)
Halen (see Submitted Names Database)
Halston (or the similar-looking Halsten)

hehe, I didn't even think of that, but it kind of makes me love it more LOL. DH may not hold my views though. I will have to see what he thinks. Thank you!
S(Hal)l We Applaud?
As a full forename, it is too minimalistic for my tastes; as a nickname, I think that it is nice. Very casual, refreshing, and appears like it would be a name that would grow decently well with it's bearer.
Are you seeking names that also begin in H, or no?
The following are a handful that came to mind...
Bartholomew
Nicholas
Haldor
Halvar / Halvard
Halvdan
Hamilton
Harlan
Harold
Henry
And as a note, the final two that I listed are generally what Hal is put to use for.
