[Opinions] Hypatia
What do folks think of Hypatia (high-PAY-shuh)? It isn't the sort of name I usually like, but it has an excellent namesake. Do you have any nickname suggestions?

I immediately think of the porn star.
The name reminds me of Hypolita or Hipolita (not sure how it is written). That is the name of a character in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. I personaly wouldn't use it but it's not bad at all. I would nick name her Pat, don't really know why.
I would naturally pronounce it hip-AY-sha. It reminds me of hippos too much. Fine for someone else. :)

Is this how it is pronounced in Greek?
I would only use it if I knew the authentic Greek pronounciation. I don't like how it sounds in English. I would pronounce "hyp" as "hip" (Hippie seems the obvious nn).
I read a historical novel about Hypatia long ago, so the name itself is not new to me. But if you are not interested in Greece or history, I suppose it sounds strange.

Sorry - sounds like an illness to me!
First thing I thought of was Hip Dysplasia
Yes, LOL! I didn't think of hip dysplasia, but of hypospadias. :b

LOL!!!
I think of Hypatia fondly because the first time that I saw it the poster suggested that a good nn for it would be Patsy, which I thought was cute, especially since my mom's name is Patricia nn Patti and I thought that Hypatia nn Patsy would be a nice, roundabout way of honoring her (as I dislike Patricia). I can never see using it myself, but it is the sort of name I would smile at if I heard it on someone else's kid. So, yeah... in short, I approve.

Oh, I don't know. It sounds too much like an ailment or condition, like alopecia or something. :b

Yeah, though it could equally well be a flower.
