Is Matisse (pronounced muh-TEESE) a real name? I remember a few years ago I was watching a show and on it there was a rocker chick and her name was Matisse. I tried looking it up but BtN says it isn't a real name (or at least isn't in the database)?
So is it or not? Cuz its starting to grow on me :)
Also, I'm starting to like Monet for a girl. Opinions on that as well??

You're not an art buff by any chance? Matisse and Monet are very arty names and tbh I actually don't mind them either!

Matisse: Latisse?
I have attempted an escape of this mindset, but all that I think of upon seeing Matisse is the prescription eyelash growth "Latisse."
Beyond that, I am still unable to find attraction to it... it simply seems harsh, unprofessional, and terribly "made-up" to me.
Monet admittedly holds a charm, but there is a present risk when using it due to it's slang definition.

Matisse sounds more feminine that masculine to me. I immediately thought of the painter and would figure the parents were fans.
Monet can be used as slang, though it's not terribly prevalent here...describing a woman who, from a distance, seems beautiful and "all that" but, on closer inspection, is discovered to be a mess. Among my family, the term has only been used to describe a yard sale that looks really interesting from the street, but turns out to be full of stuff that probably ought to be tossed out.

Well, Matisse is real the way Monet, Picasso, Beckett, Brontë, and Presley are real. They're the last names of famous figures adopted as first names. Most of them don't have much of a history of use as first names until recently. For me, they (and most other "last names as first names") fall into a sort of nebulous territory of naming where they're real but not legit.
Matisse and Monet are both all right. I wouldn't use either one unless I was a big, big fan of the artist, but that's just me.

It's a surname (as in the painter Henri Matisse). So yeah, it counts as a name. I'd assume anyone who used it were big Matisse fans, or maybe it was a family surname for them. I wouldn't have a problem with it in either of those cases, although I don't like it. I also think it sounds more masculine.
I'd think anyone named Monet had parents who were Monet fans, too. I don't like the sound of it at all.

I'd say that yes it's as much a real name as many of the other surnames that are becoming popular now. I actually knew of a Matisse (friend of a friend) a few years back but it was on a male. Personally it sounds more feminine to me.
I actually really like the idea of Monet on a little girl, it'd be a adorable.
