Where I live, Roan rhymes with own and Rowan rhymes more with owin' - anyway, it's got two clear syllables and Roan has one.
I far prefer Rowan, and to me it is strictly male-only. Rowena for girls! And a rowan tree is wonderful ... no doubt roan-coloured animals are too, and there's a Roan Antelope which is or was also a mining company ... I think. Somewhere in Zimbabwe.
