Help[Opinions] Beau
Do you like Beau for a boy? Pronounced BO. My mom is French and it isn't used there as a name (neither is Belle) but I always had a soft spot for both of them. What do you think?

It's my cat's name. So yes.

My aunt's dog's name is Beauregard nn Beau, but I also knew a kid in high school with the same name, so it could work.

I think Beau sounds too feminine for a boy. Try another French name.

I like the name (despite of how it reminds me of annoying Dutch television presenter Beau van Erven Dorens), but I generally prefer Bo - even though it's unisex in my country and I actually know a female Bo in real life. Bo seems a little bit more manly, as it is more abrupt and no-nonsense. It also helps that it makes me think of Bo Brady from "Days of Our Lives", heh heh (though his full name is Beauregard Aurelius Brady). ;)
Speaking of Beauregard... it's quite a mouthful, but so distinguished! I think I would like Beau even more if it were short for Beauregard. :)

Reading Beauregard right now I'm sort of loving it :) It's not quite as stuffy and antiquated as Bartholomew but has the same aristocratic feel. Yep, adding Beauregard to my PNL right now

The problem with me is, I could never use Beauregard, lest it be misconstrued to be in honor of Pierre Beauregard, which would make my bluebelly Yankee Civil War veteran great-great-grandfather roll over in his grave. I just recently found out that he had a brother who also served in the Civil War and was killed at Gettysburg. My great-great-grandfather survived the war.

One of my cousins has a son named Beau. She tends to favor stark simplicity in everything from home decor to baby names. I wasn't sure about Beau at first, but it has grown on me tremendously, and I really like it now (and Belle, too).
Beau's twin brother is named Lee. I think Beau got the better name; Lee's a little too stark for me.

I've never liked it. I just don't like the way it sounds. Say it twice and you have "Bobo".

So first and foremost I think of it as a dog name.
Beyond that... it is sort of a faded Southern aristocrat name, like somebody from Gone with the Wind living in their crumbling mansion with two faithful ex-slaves, thinking that the South won the war.

I know a dog named Lucy, Henry and Isabel though. My name is Kayla and throughout my life someone will say, "I know a dog named Kayla." People will always name their dogs perfectly good human names. I'm naming my daughter Stella and my grandma says "How do you feel about my neighbor having a dog named Stella?" I'm thinking..."Gram, you live in the mountains, your neighbor lives 20 acres away. I don't care about them." haha.

That's because some Southern boys were named after Confederate general Pierre Beauregard. The Beau in "Gone With the Wind" was, although he was still a child at the book's end, so let's hope he made more use of his life than sitting in a crumbling mansion wishing for the good old days.

I remember that from the book. I don't think they ever mentioned it in the movie.

Yeah, that's right. I wouldn't have thought of it, but now that you mention it, yeah. Isn't the fact that George was really his first name indicated only once in the novel, when Melanie receives a letter from him addressed to "Mrs. George Ashley Wilkes"? One of those little details that you wonder why the author even bothered with. If he was going to be called and referred to as Ashley all throughout the book, why did she bother to make his first name George and then make just that one little reference to it?

But I can see the reasoning behind Scarlett going by her middle name since she was named after her paternal grandmother, whose first name was Katie and maiden last name was Scarlett.

It's an insanely common southern convention, to have a normalish first name and go by your weird family middle name. It's soooo common that it's not even contrived for the author to do that.
