Help[Opinions] Bartolomé
What do you think? I don't like the English form, Bartholomew, but I love Bartolome /bar toll oh mey/. Bartolomeo is OK too, but not as nice. Do you think an English-speaking kid could pull it off? Could pull it off without being called Bart?

I was just wondering the very same earlier tonight. Odd.
I kind of hope a kid could. There are English-speaking kids with all kinds of names. He would definitely get called Bart unless he preferred not to, but I think it's nicer to have a nickname in the back pocket than not, with an unwieldy first name.

I much prefer Bartolome!
Bartholomew is fun, but only for a character and never in real life.
Bartolome is cool even in real life.
And I like that you could call him Tolly if you wished. Bart is not attractive, but Tolly is pretty awesome.
Bartolomeo is fun, but I think it edges back into fictional person territory.
I think an English speaking kid could pull it off the same way they'd have to pull off Bartholomew- a mouth full, but people would get used to it and it would be fine. Being as uncommon as it is, I don't think it would be a problem. It would just be like every other uncommon name that they learned and adjusted to quickly.

I think it's too much, honestly. Bartholomew is also pushing it for me, but not bad.

HOWEVER, I hate this nickname question, because it always assumes that the kid will also dislike the same nickname you dislike. For a long name like this, I'd say if you don't want Bart used, you need to quickly attach another nickname instead. Tolly? Tollo? Meo? BUT, then you need to get over yourself if your kid one day decides he likes Bart. I maintain that if you love a name but really think you'll always hate the obvious nickname, then steer clear. Maybe you'll be able to avoid it, but maybe not.

I'm in love with just about any form of this name. Bartolome is certainly one of the more elegant variants. Fantastic. And yes, with the right nn it could certainly be pulled off.
If you don't like Bart, there's always the adorable Tolly. :-)
By the way, one of my favorite forms is the (Italian, I believe), feminine Bartolomea.

I think I have an old ancestor from France named Bartolomé. I'm not sure if it was that spelling though, I don't have the papers here. Not sure what to think about it. It's a geeky sounding name, but still...there's something that makes me like it just a little bit.
