Message: "Land" - Behind the Name

Ever since I read the book Any Human Heart, the name of one of the female characters, Land Fothergill, has sort of been struck into my head, which is strange because I usually like the more elaborate, classical names like Aurelia, Cecilie, Marguerite, Letitia, things like that. What do you think of Land? Is it completely "out there"? Is there a name it could be a nickname for?

Also, I'd be hesitant to use it on a real child because I can't think of any sibling names to go with it. Any ideas?

I can see it as a nickname for names such as Lander, Landon, Maitland or Wayland, etc., but it's totally male to me.

Yolande works well, and is surprisingly well used here in South Africa (where French names have been popular since the 18th century); so any French name would do ... Cecile would please me!

Well, it looks like it could be a nn for Maitland, but other than that, I wouldn't use it. Maybe Tara because it's close to terra.

I'd say yes, it is out there and I don't think it could be used in any Anglophone society. I mean, come on - "Land ho!"

It was late and I was getting sleepy when I read your post last night and I completely missed that it was a female character you were speaking of named Land; my brain automatically went to masculine.

For a female, no, I'm not able to see Land as a name or nickname, by any stretch of reasoning or imagination, sorry.
