Matisse is a big GP of mine. I like the look and sound of it but I'm not a big enough fan of the artist to justify using it for real. Monet and Cezanne are also GPs, I've always thought they'd work as first names.

The only association I have is with the painter and I can't say I'm a fan of that style. I've only heard it pronounced the way you did and that's how it looks to me. Sound-wise, it's logical as a nickname, but I wouldn't use it, outside of family, at least, unless I really enjoy the work of that artist because I expect that's what most people will automatically think of.

I'd like to say I thought of Matisse the painter first, but I thought of Maltese dogs first. So, I'm not for it.

I like Matisse a lot. I've heard it used in real life and it works well on a real person. Matisse is also one of my favourite artists, so I have a great association with it.

It used to be really high up on my list when I was younger (even when I started posting on BtN) but over the years I've realised it is maybe a little too pretentious and contrived for me to use myself. Pretty though and I'm not opposed to seeing it on someone else's kid.

Mattea Lise nn Matisse definitely works :)

Matisse is actually a gp name for me, I think it's lovely. I like the sound of it a lot. muh-TEES is the correct way to pronounce it too. I assume it has come from the surname of French artist Henri Matisse. That's why it has an arty vibe to me. I don't personally like Mattea Lise, sorry.

Names like Matisse, Monet, or Cezanne don't bother me because they were male names- and how can they be exclusively male when they were surnames, anyway?- they bother me because they sound like weak attempts to sound classy and cultured. "Oh, let's name her Monet! That sounds super artsy, or whatever." Sorry, but I've got to be honest. Matisse definitely falls in this category for me, even though I do like the sound of it.

I've never been into surnames used as first names, and since Henri Matisse was a man, I think it's difficult to think of Matisse as a name for a girl. Same with Monet and Cezanne.
Maybe my opinions are silly, but that's how I feel.

I love Bunheads- Matisse is one of the extras/ she doesn't have lines that often. I think it could be a nn for Mattea Lise. Even if you say the combo fast, it sounds close.

Matisse is a French painter. So if I came across Matisse, I'd expect mah-TEES.

I've always found this a nice surname that could work well as a FN. I feel the same way about the painter Cézanne, and I think a hypothetical sibset of Matisse and Cézanne would be awesome, though a bit too much to use IRL.

Mattea Lise "Matisse" is cute I think :)
