[Opinions] Smiley
I have a great grandfather named Smiley. It's his given name. And true to his name, he was a contagiously happy man. When the name Miley became more popular I thought it could be a nice way to honor him.But lately, I've been thinking… Would it really be so bad to use Smiley in the middle if it were an honoring name? What would you think if you met a boy or a girl with the (probably second) middle name Smiley? What about a girl with the middle name Miley? Does the idea that it would be honoring change your opinion on the choice? Thanks!

Awesome, I love it. I've always liked this name for a dog.It is kiiind of goofy though, isn't it? Miley is an interesting way of looking at it.

Well, I always approve of family names as mns, and surnames are a very popular choice whether honouring or not, so I'd say, go for it! Rather that than the silly and ephemeral Miley! In several of John le Carre's earlier books there is a wonderful character called George Smiley and mostly referred to by his ln, so if you want a literary reference to back up Great-Grandpa, that's a good one.

This name is terrible. I would hate to be named Smiley like Miley Cryus, because she is awful and her music sucks.

I think it's fine. Surprisingly, I know multiple females named Miley and the Miley Cyrus association isn't a problem.

With Miley, I immediately think of Miley Cyrus. So, don't use that. Smiley would be funny, but maybe your kid will be bullied with it, even if it's only his/her middle name. You can, however, give your kid a (middle) name that means "smile", "smiling" or "happy" (I've put a * after names I like):For a girl: Basma, Hande, Ibtisam, Alaia*, Bahija, Dilshad, Eija(a)*, Fariha, Gioconda, Iucunda, Huan, Lành*, Makena, Nandita, Rada, Yu, Tabassum. For a boy: Asher*, Dilshad, Fortunato, Fortunatus, Hani, Huan, Lành*, Macario, Macarius*, Makarios, Makar, Makena, Obrad, Parviz, Sa'id, Selig, Shad, Felix*, Basim, Bassam, Tabassum, Isaac*.

I keep picturing someone named Smiley being clinically depressed. Hey, it could happen. As a middle name, though, I think it's fine. I'm of the opinion that practically anything goes for a middle name.

do you remember...Guy Smiley on Sesame Street? The screaming, overexcited game show host?

Actually, I don't. I didn't watch much "Sesame Street".

I know someone named Smiley. He's always smiling, too. When he is introduced sometimes people laugh but once they get to know him they all agree that's the only name right for him.If it's in the middle name spot, that's even easier to get away with.

It's ok as a mn for honoring purposes. Smiley is also a surname, as in John LeCarré's character of the British spymaster George Smiley.

I would definitely not like having Smiley as even my last name. I don't care who it honors or what it means, I would not like to have it. It sounds oily and icky, though I don't really know why.I don't like Miley either because it has almost the same vibe as Smiley.
