[Opinions] Hudson
Hudson only got 3 votes on my "more boys names" poll (http://www.behindthename.com/polls/225429). I'm curious! I thought this was a really popular name. If you are a Hudson hater, what bothers you about it? As a Canadian, it almost seems like a patriotic name to me, because Hudson Bay is a big part of our geography. I think it sounds really cool too. I like the nicknames Hud and Sonny... what do you guys think?

I think it's the sound. The HUH, the pushing out of breath, is kind of comic. It gives me a vague impression of football (huddle), but a cartoonish one. I guess besides the HUH sound I just don't like the style - surnamey names seem hypersporty and impersonal to me, hard to take seriously. Hudson isn't awful, it's just not any better than Jackson or Ryder.
I find it harsh and mean sounding. I can't imagine a cute little baby called Hudson, it sounds like a bully's name.
I actually quite like her.
It gets a double 'No, thanks' from me, simply because I don't like lnfns or geographical names, and it scores twice. And the thought of Hud as a possible nn is unattractive.
I really like Hudson, although for me, the Hudson Bay association is kind of a turn off (I'm Canadian too). I feel like the association might be a little too strong, and it might come across as cheesy to some people. That's just me nitpicking though. I know of someone with a three year old named Hudson, and I'm sure the name is rising up in popularity as much here as anywhere else.
My main issue with it is that it's a little trendy right now. It sort of just came out of nowhere, and now it's getting popular. That's never good. I don't want my child to have a name that people can trace back to a certain decade, because that's when it shot up in popularity. The thing I like about the name though is that it oozes "cool". It's got such a solid sound to it, but it doesn't sound rough, if that makes sense. It's a great combination of hard/strong and artsy/sensitive.
Not a big fan of Hud and Sonny as nicknames. I like the nn Sonny, but not for Hudson. I don't think it works, for some reason. I probably wouldn't use a nickname.
