[Opinions] River
Hey all,
Just wondering what the opinions are of the name River for a girl. It's been growing on me lately. I've always been a sucker for -er ending names, and I like that it has a nature theme. I'm not as big a fan of the standard -er names for girls like Heather, Harper, Piper, Summer, etc. I guess names like Taylor and Sawyer (traditionally sir names or boy's names) are starting to catch on for girls, but I feel like River is a nice alternative, and I also like that it's not an occupation name but still has the -er.
I've always loved hiking by, swimming, kayaking, and just generally exploring rivers anyway. There's something calming about them. And I've always liked the name Brooke, which is more mainstream, but why not River? Even though I know it's less common. Though is it too out there? Too "hippy-ish"?
I do think the middle name should be more traditional and feminine, so I was thinking possible combos of: River Amelia, River Louisa, River Victoria, River Elizabeth, or River Olivia (couldn't help myself with it "iv" repetition, lol). Any other combo ideas?
General opinions and thoughts are welcome! Thanks!
~Laura

I like it for both genders. It's nice but I prefer Brooke - which I say you mention. My first thought is River Song who is a character on the popular UK show Doctor Who. Apart from that I don't have any associations of the name on people.
It can well work in real life, just like Brooke, Sky, and Meadow, and all of the flower and gem names do.
From your combo stock I like River Amelia and River Louisa. Would also like River Louise, River Matilda and River Georgina. Something three syllables that ends in an A would be nice :)

I love it. I don't llike many -er names on girls, but I like nature names and I like the sound of River. (also, River Tam.)
I don't think it's too out-there or hippy-ish. I'd name a girl River in a heartbeat!
River Louisa and River Victoria are nice.
Random River combos that I like:
River Sabriel, River Luna, River Angharad, River Morwen, River Morgana, River Branwen, River Callista, River Bryony, River Andraste, River Andromeda, River Artemis, River Artemisia, River Calanthe, River Cordelia, River Elena, River Elana, River Galadriel, River Guinevere, River Fiera, River Hannelore, River Hermione, River Oriana, River Alessandra, River Morrigan, River Tamsin, River Saoirse, River Minerva, River Annora

I think...I think it's a very obvious nature name, which isn't the worst thing in the world, or even all that bad , but there is very little imagination in it. Upon hearing it, I would know you like rivers. There is no mystery to it, it's up-front. Since I like a little mystery in names, I can't get behind this one 100%. It's just plain .

I like River, but really only on a boy and it's a GP of mine. I think it certainly works on a girl, but I like it better on a boy. I wouldn't say it's too "out there" or "hippie". She'll no doubt have people commenting on her name being unique, interesting, odd, cool, or whatever adjective people decide to use, for her entire life. That would be a concern of mine, but maybe you don't think that's a big deal.
I'm not a huge fan of River Victoria or River Olivia because there are too many v's. They don't flow very well. River Elizabeth is too much of a contrast...spunky cool River and boring Elizabeth. River Louisa seems a bit mismatched too. I like River Amelia the best.

I actually like it on both boys and girls. I'm not a fan of -er names with an American accent, but if you're British, go for it. It's catching on a bit all over the world, so I don't think everyone you'll meet will find it too hippyish.
It does make me think of River Song from Doctor Who, but that's just me.
I really like River Victoria and River Elizabeth!

I think River is too Hollywood/hipster/hippie. I can't take it seriously, on a boy or a girl. It doesn't even have a very attractive sound to my ear.
I am a sort of traditionalist. I prefer more common names, but I think River is lovely. It has the added benefit of, when she is looking for a job, there won't be any discrimination over her gender. When you hear names like River, Jordan, and Taylor, it could be anyone. It's nice. I prefer River Olivia- because it means 'peaceful river'- but also the double 'iv' and that it has a bit of class about it! My parents gave me the name 'Catherine' but spelled an Irish way (don't ask), and people always misspell it, then say 'well, no, I have it correct.' Just don't go crazy and make her name, like, Ryyvir or something. I think River is a little hippy-ish, but in a good way.
