[Opinions] Moffat?

I read my kids a library book today about siblings Morgan (boy) and Moffat (girl), nicknamed Morgie and Moffie. What do you think of Moffat? Boy or girl? Nicknames? Usable? Combos?

It reminds me of The Silence of the Lambs. There's an anagram at one point with the surname Moffet and all I think of when I see Moffat is the disgusting head in a jar they found...

Morgan is cute. Moffat is hideous. It also makes me think of the cultural trainwreck that is Steven Moffat and his issues with women/female characters.So no.

Not in South Africa, where Moffie is a highly derogatory nn for a gay man and has probably started more fights than any other known word.

Little Miss...(m)It just reminds me of the nursery rhyme. I don't like. Also, when I saw the name originally, to me it sounded masculine, not feminine whatsoever. Though Moffie is feminine sounding it is a little too close to Muffie for some people to be comfortable with it.

Except the nursery rhyme is Muffet. I think it sounds masculine too.

I agree with mirfak in that I think it sounds like the name of a muppet's character... or maybe a big shaggy dog - I can totally see "The Adventures of Moffat" as a children's book, akin to Clifford the Big Red Dog.Also, it's bringing to mind "The Moffats" which is some band I remember from my youth ("The Moffats" is a apparently a book series, as well)

Ha, the Moffats was the first thing that came to mind. I had forgotten about them completely (never listened to that kind of music) until I saw the name here. Weird.

Pardon the ignorance, but why? I hadn't ever heard of Stephen Moffat before. Is there some kind of negative association with him?

Stephen Moffat is the writer for the popular BBC TV shows Doctor Who and Sherlock. He often kills off favourite characters. This is the main reason why fans don't like him. If you've never seen Doctor Who or Sherlock, you probably haven't heard of him.

That's true. I saw the post and that's what I thought of. I'm not rage-y, though. Just like, "hey, Moffat!"I'd feel bad for a kid named this. Though the nn Moffie is kinda cute.

I think ... not really usable for a girl. On a girl especially it reminds me of muppet and moppet and muffin and little miss muffet, and Moffett Field (idiosyncratic - I grew up near there). Moffie basically IS Muffy, isn't it? It's so close. I also see "mo fat" in it (although I probably would not quickly notice that IRL). Only because it IS surnamey, it would be passable on a boy. NMS though.

Oh gosh. I feel bad for people who have to use the surname Moffat. I would positively die for a person with the first name Moffat. I just picture myself as a roly-poly child, being chased around the playground with "Mo' FAT! Mo'ffffffffattttttttttt". omg I'm getting anxiety just thinking about it and it didn't even happenI guess Moff is kinda cool in a...way...
