[Opinions] Polly
A very close friend of mine recently had a baby girl, who she named Polly. I'm unsure whether I like it or not. I think it's very sweet sounding, and will obviously be cute on her as a young child, but I wonder if she will dislike it as an teenager/adult?
I personally think that, with 'cute' names (for example: Polly, Betsy, Kitty, Missy, Mimi), it is kinder on the child for them to have it as a nn for a more 'grown-up' first name. Just so that in more 'grown-up' situations, such as job interviews, they can go by their first name to avoid seeming immature.
So, what do you think of the name Polly? And what could it be a nn for? I was thinking maybe Paula.

I know a 50 year old named Polly and it really suits her so yes I can imagine it growing well with age.
I hate the name Polly. Hate it. Just hate it. Nothing but pure hatred in me for this name.
I agree with you about "cute" names. Polly, even if one likes it, should not be on a birth certificate.
Polly has traditionally been a nickname for Mary, which I am sure that someone or probably many have already said, and that's the only name that I can see it as nickname for.

I like Polly very much; it seems more lively and pretty than Molly.
A remote branch of my family tree contains a Hannah Mary cousin who was born in about 1895 and named after her grandmother, who died in the same year. I know nothing about Granny, but Cousin was always known as Polly, until her death when she was 85. So I'm fine with it on an older person!
It could work for Paula, which is the best of the fem forms of Paul but still not a name I'd consider, perhaps because I really like Paul for a boy. If I wanted a Polly daughter - which would be delightful - I'd name her Marianne and let her take her chances.

I like it, but I like a lot of "nick-namey" girl names! I don't think it will sound too immature on an adult at all, but then like I said, I like those types of names.
I thought of Polly Pocket too! Cutesy name's aren't really my style, either, except as nicknames :)
I've loved it ever since I read The Magician's Nephew as a kid. I prefer it as a nickname, though I don't think it's too cutesy to age along with the child.
Polly is a guilty pleasure name of mine. I really love it, it just sounds so sweet. I don't think I would have the guts to actually use it but I love, love hearing that someone else did. When I did think about using it I thought of using the name Polly itself but I do like it a lot as a nickname for Mary and also Paula. Would give the child more options just in case.
I have a thing for "olly" names, I love Polly, Holly, Molly and even Dolly! :)
My daughter had a sweet older woman as a preschool teacher named Polly. I really do like it!
