Help[Opinions] Thoughts on "Marita"
I have a friend (who is a very devout christian), who named his daughter Marita. It is a combination of "Mary" and "Rita" from both saints. Normally, I hate made up names but I like this one quite a bit. Yours?

I know an older Marita. Don't know how old exactly, but she has a 21 year old kid if that helps. It sounds classic to me.

It's ok. It has a sort of, psuedo-Spanish feel to it that feels forced. It's upbeat and cheery sounding but also stale and not refreshing

It was my aunt's name, too. She changed it to Hanna bout 10 years ago though. I can't say I like the name, it's a little too harsh sounding for me.

Here in South Africa it's sometimes used as a collapsed form of Margaretha (and mostly spelt Maretha; same sound though) or a merger of Maria Margaretha.
I prefer the local spelling: in Latin Marita would I think = Wife.

It's not made up. It's just a diminutive of Mary / Maria. Maritza is the one that is fairly popular at the moment so it seems to me to be sort of a variant of that. In a standard American accent Marita sounds a lot like Merida (the character in "Brave") and that's sort of a made up name, but I think it's pretty.

It must be me, I must have really sloppy speech. I'd say Mah Ree Ta at first, but if I were talking fast and the name was familiar, I think it'd come out sounding very similar to Merida. Slightly softer D sound.

It depends on how you pronounce Merida. Saying Marita sloppily would be mur-EE-da, but Merida would be MER-i-da based on how it was pronounced in "Brave".

I say Merida too. And I'm the one that says "winter" with a "t", always.

Well, I don't particularly care for Mary or Rita. And to be honest, I don't care for Marita at all... It sounds sort of like somebody with a few under their belt, asking for another " marrrr-itaaa"...
(I know, I know, most people aren't asking for another margarita when they are drunk.)

Anyways, so, nah. It's nms and I just don't really like it much. But I wouldn't go so far as to say its a terrible ugly name. That is reserved for (in my opinion!) Gertrude, Martha, Larry or Horace...

I think Martha belongs in that class. I never saw the prettiness in that name, TBH. It sounds so heavy and clunky to me.

Well, everyone's entitled to their own opinion, but the general opinion is that it's a beautiful name. I think it's got a fullness to it rather than a clunkiness; a richness :).

...it sounds to me like you're saying, in so many words, "You are entitled to your opinion, but you should know it is the incorrect one." Maybe that's not what you mean, but that's what it sounds like. How can you know what the general opinion of Martha is? A committee didn't meet without me and decide that Martha is a beautiful name. Weird.

I know Martha isn't to everyone's taste, I just didn't think it was in the same category as the other names in that list! It is a bit of an old lady name, but it's actually quite popular on little girls in England, at least where I live.
Anyway, I think you're lovely, and you have great taste in names (always wanted to tell you that lol) xx

I agree. Martha is old fashioned, but is not clunky like some of the other names she mentioned. I think it's lovely.
