It's a nice name. I could see it working for a child today.

I don't think it's pretentious or over the top at all. It's a nice name, and I'd use it in a heartbeat if my cousin didn't have a son named Max.

There are a lot of nickname possibilities as well - Max being the easiest one.

I think that Maxilimian is recognizable and familiar enough to the general population that it is usable. Yes, it is a bit over-the-top, but only in length.

It's not quite as bold as using, say, Bartholomew or Nicodemus - nor as pretentious as something like Lancelot, Lazarus or King.

It's a fine name. I had a cousin in the 90s want to name his son that, and use the nickname Max - so it's been on people's minds for a while.

Not too over the top to use at all imo. I also love it.
