[Opinions] Jay?
What do you think of Jay as a full first name for a boy? I know it could be a nickname for anything starting with J - Jonathan, Joseph, James (et al) but I'm really starting to like it on it's own. I like the bird connection and that it's not self-consciously cool, like names like Peregrine or Falcon.Thoughts? Leo Alexander - b. 2012Maeve Luna & Tamsin Rose - b. 2014

I like it. I like it better than as a nickname, actually.

It's a handsome enough name, and I don't think it has to be a nickname for anything. It's the name of my half-brother, but in his case it's a nickname, as his real given name is Joseph.

Thankyou :)

I've always liked it but I'd never use it because it doesn't feel like it's 'enough' if that makes sense. I'd admire someone for using it though cos I really do like it.

Not feeling 'enough' does make sense. It is so short, over almost before it's begun. But in some ways, I like it because of that. It's like a sudden flash of blue.I wouldn't use it with a short last name, though. A long-ish surname, three-syllables or more, I think would be enough to balance it out?

I think it's good. Jay and Ray (Raymond) are favorites of mine. It's easy to overlook them as names among other names, but I don't think they're forgettable when they belong to a person. I don't even think of birds. It's an initial name that is a legit full name, like Dee or Kay.

I like it for the same reasons you listed, and also because I like short simple names. It would be a nice foil for a longer, fancier middle name, too.

My dear brother is a Jason, so I've taken a good look at Jay, too. I really like it. Jay has a nice simplicity, and, unlike most other bird names for boys, it doesn't sound so aggressive. Those bird-of-prey names, like Falcon, sound like they're ready to rip you to pieces.

There are a couple in my family (dad's uncle and great uncle), a co-worker and a brother of one of my classmates are all Jay. It isn't my style, but I think it's usable.

I think it's fine, although I prefer it as a nickname. To be perfectly honest, I've recently started liking Ray as well.

Thanks :)Ray... Ray is interesting. I'm torn between thinking of rays of sun and ray-guns. It's going to be one of those names that I either love or can't stand, I think.

I think it works better as a nickname for James / Jason / Jayden / etc. but it can certainly work on its own with the right surname. I don't know if that's why you were asking but it also looks nice with the names you have in your signature.

I'm just asking because because I was wondering about it. I've only just had twins, I'm not hoping for another kid anytime soon :p I like that you think it sounds nice with my other kid's names though! And I'd agree that surname is important for Jay to stand on its own. We have a three-syllable surname so it would work with ours, I think, but with a short lastname it wouldn't sound so good.

I absolutely love Jay! It's on my favourites list (and PNL), and I really like it for a boy. I think it works really well as a first name, and I'd never really assume or think it was short for anything. For some reason it feels like more of a full name for a boy, but more of a nickname for a girl (maybe because a I knew a girl with nn J?). I also like the nature/bird connection, and the subtle link to my name, which begins with J.

Ohh, that's interesting you'd never assume it was a nn for anything on a boy. The subtle link to J beginning names as a kind of honouring is neat too. It didn't occur to me! I like Jay even more, now... My SO's name is Jordan :)And I really love Lyra, by the way. I have a weakness for L names and love His Dark Materials.

Awwh, thanks about Lyra. Your children have amazing names by the way!
