It looks more like ANN-es, to me. Pronouncing it like Anise isn't instinctive to me at all, and I'm not sure in what language it would be instinctive. It's very pretty to look at, however.

I've always heard Anise as AN-is. I use Anise as my comparison but to just say AN-es would be better. I'll edit. :)

Anise (at least the plant) is pronounced "ANN-iss" though, right? I'm pretty sure... but it does look like "ah-NEES" and a lot of people probably pronounce it like that. In that regard Annes would be a more phonetic spelling. Or Anness
For me Anise and Annes sound near identical. That's like when I say Agnes it sounds like AG-nis. The only time -nes is ever pronounced as intended in my accent is when it's at the start of a word or name.
