[Opinions] Spurgeon
That's the name this chick gave her baby. I don't quite know who she is, one of the Duggars? Anyway, here is an article:http://www.people.com/article/jessa-duggar-seewald-baby-spurgeon-elliot-seewaldNot my taste. Es muy mal. :P Willoughby wolloughby willina, an elephant sat on Billina.

Well she's famous what do you expect. It sounds like surgeon

And sturgeon. Don't forget sturgeon.

lmaoI kept skipping this thread because Spurgeon is ugly and forgot to google 'duggar' this last week. lmao. This is hideous. I'm glad they're calling him Quincy. Spurgeon Seewald. jfc.
vote up1
For some reason, I never even thought of his last name. UGH. That is awful.
vote up1
I'm embarrassed to say...I kind of like it. Spurgeon isn't really my style and I wouldn't use it but I am a fan of Charles Spurgeon. If I were going to honor him I'd definitely use Haddon, his middle name.

I've seen this on Free Jinger this morning and had to see if it was discussed here! It's a terrible, terrible name. Not just weird but ugly sounding. If they wanted to honor this theologian, Charles is a perfectly decent name.
vote up1
They obviously wanted the honoring aspect to be more apparent. Charles could be for anyone, Spurgeon more quickly communicates who they're referencing.
vote up1
I know but it's ugly as heck. They could have named him Charles Spurgeon and used Charles.
vote up1
I wonder if Charles was too Darwin?
vote up1
Hadn't thought of that. It's not the first association I have with Charles myself.
vote up1
LOLAnd then to call the kid Quincy!?! Love it!I do get naming your kids after religious people. One of the reason Anne is on our list is because of Anne Hutchinson (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anne_Hutchinson). But the name is ANNE and it's common. Spurgeon? No.

Somewhere between Sturgeon, Surgeon, Surge, Purge, Splurge..

... and sperm. sperm dungeon.
vote up1
Apparently......they will be calling him Quincy, since that's the NN they chose for him while he was still in the womb.Well, Quincy is at least better than Spurgeon. :/
vote up1
If this is true, then Quincy is only marginally better. I really don't understand the practice of naming a child one name and giving them a nn that is completely unrelated. My youngest, Anna, had a science teacher last year who is as old as my oldest dd (mid 20s). Her birth name is Berkley yet the parents had always planned to call her Teddy after a cartoon they'd seen while the mom was pregnant with her. I could understand modifying the fn to accommodate Teddy (Theodora, Dorothea) yet it has no relationship to her real name at all. That's kind of odd and confusing, imo.

I understand it in the case of a son being named after his father, and then giving him a nickname to avoid confusion. This was why my father Joseph was called Bud.My SO goes by a completely unrelated nickname. In his culture, this is extremely common. When I questioned someone more knowledgeable than I about why that is, I was told that it's because to have a street name is protection against the police. Sounds reasonable. But in my SO's case, he was called by his nickname from very early childhood. His nickname is that of a great-uncle. I'm not sure why it's not on his birth certificate. I mean, I think his nickname is ridiculous, but his mother thought it was good enough to call him by, so I don't know why she didn't think it was good enough to put on his birth certificate.

They should have just named the damn kid Quincy and been done with it.

My thoughts exactly!

So Agree. This is two people trying to look smart and religious, and instead looking like morons.
vote up1
That's a relief. But why not Quincy Spurgeon?
vote up1
I don't have the words to convey how bad this is.
vote up1
All sturgeon to me! Very fishy!
vote up1
And not just the fishy sturgeon. I'm immediately struck by the fact that it rhymes with virgin (or close enough, anyway). Spurgeon the virgin sturgeon, lol.
vote up1
At least the way this kid will be brought up, homeschooled Spurgeon will be expected to be Spurgeon the Virgin until the day he is married. He'll avoid the public school taunts anyway...a small mercy.

Ugh, it has such an ugly and unpleasant sound, like spurting and purging. Basically it sounds like projectile vomiting.
vote up1
All I hear is 'purge'It sounds like an invasive fish species.Cute kid though.
vote up1
Super ugly. Does it mean anything in English or is it just a surname?
vote up1
It doesn't mean anything. It's close to "surgeon" and "sturgeon" but it's not an English word. As a surname I can't think it's common. I've never known or heard of anyone with it as a last name, but if you Google it, you find it is one.
vote up1
I know. Isn't it awful? Hopefully, the poor tyke will have a nn. What I don't get is if the parents named their ds after Charles Spurgeon, why not call him Charles? Or why not put Elliot (after Jim and Elisabeth Elliot) in the fn position? So many other, much better options ...ETA that I just read an article with comments on the Urban Dictionary meaning of Spurgeon. What an unfortunate name all the way around ... http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=spurgeon

Yes she is a (former) Duggar and while I wouldn't use the name myself, I understand the reason behind why they have. He is named for Charles Spurgeon, a preacher who still makes an impact to this day. Tbh, I like the fact that they gave their baby a name with meaning to them, rather than throwing a bunch of letters together to create a "unique" name, just for the sake of it.

There is a place to use the surname of a person one wants to honor, when the surname makes for a horribly unattractive personal name. That place is the middle name slot. Therefore, I don't excuse.

agree

there are plenty of "horribly unattractive" names that have been regularly used as first names, though. It's all subjective. I happen to think the name Cleveland is horribly unattractive but if someone wanted to use it to honor Grover Cleveland who am I to say Cleveland should stay out of sight in the middle? Maybe they felt that Spurgeon wouldn't be prominent enough, and therefore wouldn't convey their want to honor, if they had relegated it to the middle. Maybe they planned to call him Spurgeon but once he arrived they couldn't part with Quincy

It's my opinion I was asked for and was giving, so I get to decide what's horribly unattractive and what should stay in the middle. For the purpose of my answer only.
vote up1
of course you get to decide what constitutes a horribly unattractive name, to you. I just find it curious that you would rebut someone else's acceptance of it, or else, reply to someone else's reply as such. I don't see where Pink Princess asked for your opinion...

Actually, Pink Princess stated a fact -- He is named for Charles Spurgeon, a preacher who still makes an impact to this day. -- and based her opinion on this fact. I was unaware of this fact when I made my answer, as I rarely read the responses of others before posting my own. So what I was doing was stating that knowledge of this fact has slightly modified my opinion (it would be okay as a middle name) but not fundamentally changed it (but still not as a first.) It was a statement of how knowledge of the fact has influenced or not influenced my opinion, not a rebuttal of her opinion. If I'd happened to read her response before making my own and included this in my original response, I don't think you would have had a problem with it yet it still would have been based upon the knowledge I gained by reading Pink Princess' post.

Now I'm wondering who would want to honor Grover Cleveland, and why? This is kind of fun, actually. Fans of presidents who served two non-consecutive terms? Fans of mouth tumors and fabulous mustaches? :P

I just don't know. A large reason why the name Cleveland baffles me

He was the only President born in New Jersey. Reason enough for me!

Ditto

It's awful. Reminds me of surgeon. Then splurgin'. I've never found it to be an attractive name, period. :/
vote up1
It reminds me of: sturgeon (and thus, caviar), surgeon, turgid, splurge, purge. The "urge" sound is really unappealing.

Ick, all I can think of when I see this "name" is the word surgeon. That poor boy. :(
