This is a first for me. At this time, I don't like it.

It's kind of cool but I can't see it working well in English.

Most feedback I've heard from Germans regarding this name was negative. I did a little research on the name and it seems that in Germany the Detlef is considered a joke. Apparently the name Detlef is associated with gay stereotypes, in part due to its overuse in homophobic jokes during the 1970s (which is when the name seems to have fallen out of use). It's kinda surprising since it was a very popular name in the 1940s and 1950s.

Not a fan. It feels like its going somewhere and then suddenly it stops. I don't know how to explain why I feel that way, but it bothers me.

I don't like how it looks or how it sounds. It reminds me of Dettmar though, someone I know has a nephew named this who should be about 6 now. Never liked that one either.

My college roommate's boyfriend was named Detlef. He was of German birth. I like it, though I wouldn't use it cause I'm not German.

I know the wife of a Detlef, and have met him once or twice. He's known as Det. Seems fine to me! Wouldn't use it myself, because there are so many names I like better.

I went to high school with a boy called Detlev. He was very annoying, so this might influence my opinion, but I hate the name. It sounds ugly, like a bunch of letters just thrown together.

Detlef Schrempf is a basketball player/cool guy, and I've only ever heard it on him. I think it's a fairly ugly name, though. It seems unfinished and seems to feel like more of a title than a name, like Colonel or Sergeant. Not sure why.

I love it, but I tend to be a fan of a lot of German names. It's very refined and striking to me, and without being overly macho and gruff it still sounds very masculine. I think I sort of prefer the spelling Detlev though.
