Hm, I ran across this one too, just yesterday!
Well, you and I both adore those Mer- names on boys.. and this is no exception. I like the clipped sound of it, and the frank virtue meaning. It works well on a girl, also.
Only problem that might stop me from using it (if there were no names I liked even better) is, the word "merit" is politically loaded - "merit-based hiring & admissions" being a phrase I hear tossed around a lot.
I like the sound of Merry too, though I'd probably not have people call him that till the boy was old enough to carry it with some bluster.
