[Opinions] Meriwether
I'm a big history buff and I love researching Meriwether Lewis. I'd love to name a child after the famous explorer, but I don't want to use such an outdated and loaded name. Any ideas for names or name combinations that would draw from Meriwether?
I'm open to either gender (after all, Disney feminized the name with a certain cheeky fairy).

Merrick is the only modern boys' name I can think of that sounds close.
Cedric Meriwether, Emerson Meriwether, Rafael Meriwether, and Justin Meriwether were the first combos that came to mind.
Also, I liked all of earthnut's suggestions that end in O, so...

Would Lewis be out of the question? And why not Meriwether as is? If it's to "out there" as a first name, then as a middle name it's fine -- more than fine. Or, did he have a middle name that could work?
Clement means "mild" as in "mild / merciful." That's a tern that is also used for (good) weather. A combination like Clement Eugene would get close to the meaning of Meriwether. Sort of.
The only other thing that came to mind was Meredith, which is traditionally male. But at that point you might as well stick with Meriwether.
Sorry I'm not much help. Basically, the best / safest way to honor the explorer in the first name slot is to use Lewis. :0)

Really digging:
Douglas Meriwether -- And I'm not the biggest Douglas fan. I love it when combos can alter my OP like that.
Galen Meriwether
Hugo Meriwether -- wow
Laurence (or Lawrence) Meriwether -- Instead of the Columbia, he's travelling the St. Lawrence in my mind
Silas Meriwether -- 19th century down to the ground
Tycho Meriwether -- astrologer meets explorer
May I add:
Leif Meriwether -- explorers unite
Brendan Meriwether -- St. B the Navigator
Henry Meriwether -- for "Henry the Navigator"

Love the idea of combining the name with places he helped map or people he worked with. And I'm really liking Laurence Meriwether, it has a great ring.
