I have always liked Algernon, although I know it reminds people of some strange play ("Flowers for Algernon"). I think it's supposed to be a soft G, but I'm not 100% sure.
Usable...I don't know. Not here, but perhaps in the English-speaking world.

It's a soft g. I think it's great fun, with the meaning and because I only associate it with "The Importance of Being Earnest." I think it's too silly or maybe pretentious seeming to use IRL.

I say it with a soft 'g'. It's fun, but I don't find it particularly usable on a human....it would be an awesome name for a dog though!

Yes it's meant to be a "g" pronounced like a "j". I'm unsure if a hard g pronunciation could or is an alternate pronunciation, it wouldn't surprise me if it is. And wow, it sounds nicer with a hard g.

I like it but it makes me sad because of the book "Flowers for Algernon". It also makes me think of hospitals and white sterility because of the book. Normally things like that don't affect my liking of names, but perhaps because Algernon is so uncommon it's all I can think of.
