[Opinions] Algernon
WDYTO Algernon? I think it sounds like the name of a king in a medieval fantasy. Is it usable? How do you prounce it? I have been saying it with a hard g, but is it supposed to be a soft g?

It's a soft g. I think it's great fun, with the meaning and because I only associate it with "The Importance of Being Earnest." I think it's too silly or maybe pretentious seeming to use IRL.

It's a soft g.
And no, it is not usable. It doesn't sound like any king, it sounds like allergy medicine, or a support group for people with allergies, like Al-Anon.
And it's unbearably posh and stuffy, almost a parody of the British aristocrat 100 years ago.
And there's "Flowers for Algernon" where Algernon is a lab mouse.

I adore it! It's one of my favorite names -- I gave it to one of my cats.
I pronounce it with a soft "g," and I prefer that pronunciation.

I say it with a soft 'g'. It's fun, but I don't find it particularly usable on a human....it would be an awesome name for a dog though!
Hi !!!
Yes I pronounce with soft g like in French.
I agree with you for the medieval royal vibe!!!
I would like that there were more people with this kind of names!!

With the G sounding like a J. As in the immortal poem:
Algy met a bear.
The bear was bulgy.
The bulge was Algy.
I think there are very many worse names in circulation. I'd love to meet a little Algernon.

lol. That was the first thought that came into my head too :)
Yes it's meant to be a "g" pronounced like a "j". I'm unsure if a hard g pronunciation could or is an alternate pronunciation, it wouldn't surprise me if it is. And wow, it sounds nicer with a hard g.
I like it but it makes me sad because of the book "Flowers for Algernon". It also makes me think of hospitals and white sterility because of the book. Normally things like that don't affect my liking of names, but perhaps because Algernon is so uncommon it's all I can think of.
