My FIL got Ernest as his fn, after a good friend of his father's, but nobody ever used it. DH got it as his fn, but he's never used it either. It could suit him though: he's an earnest kind of person.
My issue is the Er- sound. I don't' like it in Bert, Gertrude, Mervyn, Percy etc and I don't think it's an accident that they're all pretty well unused now after having been popularish at much the same time. Fashionable sounds; perhaps the -aden names of their day?
