Brutal honesty following.
The dinosaur was my first thought, then the Wizard of Oz. Dorothy sounds like an old lady name to me. A bit of teasing potential in my opinion. I prefer Dorothea, it has more spunk and I can see it across all age groups. Less immediate teasing potential too.

I don't see the appeal of Dot. Dottie is like loony/crazy. Dorrie or Thea (and even Dora) would be more palatable.

Dorothy is lovely, but Dot as a nickname is too associated with the EastEnders character for me. Outside the UK, probably not an issue. Grace is fine, but overused as a middle name. It goes well with Dorothy, though. I prefer Dorothea to Dorothy, nn Dora or Thea. Dora works for Dorothy, but Thea would be a stretch. That said, I prefer Theodora to Dorothea, currently.

Yeah, I prefer Theodora too but this is for my friend's bub and she isn't as taken by Theodora.
Also, not in the UK so the EastEnders character isn't an issue. Dot will mainly be a family nickname, not an "all the time" nickname and part of the appeal of Dorothy for her and her husband is that it has a few nickname options :)

They like Dorrie too. Part of the appeal of the name is definitely nickname options. I think Dot/Dottie are especially appealing because of the character in 'A League of Their Own.'

I'm really excited about it. My friend likes some old fashioned names and some more modern names (there doesn't seem to be much of a theme going in her style- and definitely not a name nerd) and she and her husband adore Dorothy (and all the potential nicknames) but are a little worried about it being perceived as "old" by others. Their initial mn choice was going to be Mae (honoring name) but they worried it made Dorothy seem too old sounding. I suggested Grace because it's a very "now" middle name and they fell in love with the combo. So while the name nerd in me would prefer to push a more interesting mn, Grace has made Dorothy feel super comfortable for them.

She'll definitely not be called Dot exclusively. They love the full name too but they are a big nicknaming family and there is no way any kid of their's is going to be exclusively their full name all the time. I agree about Grace but I think going with a more unusual choice for the first name made them lean towards a more current and widely liked middle name.

I'm quite liking Dorothy right now, since two bands I really love have the name; I recently used it as a middle for the first time. I think it has a good mix of slightly whimsical, but feisty and badass, although the latter might be from my associations. It's a pretty name, but has a good deal of substance. Dorothy Grace 'Dot' is nice, not what I'd go for combowise or for a nn, but it flows well.

Dorothy is not a name I'd use or want for myself, but it has more than a smidgen of cuteness and charm about it, without being at all cutesy. It's down-to-earth with just a touch of fun to it. Dorothy Grace is cute as all-get-out too. Dot, not so much; it would have to really suit the person.

Dot will be a family nickname for the most part. They love Dorothy enough that I don't see them using a nickname exclusively at all. I think part of the appeal for my friend with Dot/Dottie as a fun nickname is the character from 'A League of Their Own', one of her favorite movies.
