I'd agree about the reason for its popularity being the heroic/classical vibe.
I also think it's less "geeky" than it used to be? Or at least geeky names in general are more popular now.
(I like the name but I wouldn't use it as a first name for an actual baby. Like can you imagine a 2 year old named after the goddess of wisdom screaming because they want candy?? lol. Although
Athena was pretty chaotic and vengeful...)
