I like it. I think it's better than Matthew. I like "Mat" names but the whole "ew" thing is just not appealing to me at all (although I do think Matthew is better than Andrew).

I really liked Matei when I heard it a few years ago. I think it’s interesting (much more than Matthew), and I like the sound, although I first heard it as Muh-tie. I definitely like it better than Matthew, which I find a bit dull.

I prefer Matthew myself but I'm quite biased as Matthew is my brother's name. But Matei seems okay to me, you could also try Mateo/Matteo (mah-tay-oh) as well. I personally quite like the variant Mathias/Matthias too

I"m not a fan of Matthew / Matthias names and all their forms seem boring to me.

I would prefer Maciej (the Polish form) to it. Not because I like Maciej but I heard it while in Poland and it seems very friendly to me.
