[Opinions] Tempest
WDYT? i've been seeing Storm so much lately, and i always thought that was a bit odd of a name. it's not just a word with a negative connotation, it's a word you see OFTEN, in terrible news stories. i feel like it'd be sad for a small kid to constantly see their name in headlines talking about deaths and destruction.i can see the appeal, though. it's a bit poetic, and is often given with the intent that the bearer stand up for themself and be strong and expressive. so i've been warming up a bit to Tempest*- i wouldn't use it, but it's kind of cool. it's not really seen used anywhere but poetry and literature, so it doesn't have the connotations that Storm does, despite being the same thing. i also like how it has such a different and interesting sound- very consonant heavy, yet somehow still soft.i like Temperance a lot too, for the similar sound. though that name has a pretty opposite meaning lol. i thought it'd be funny to make a character named Temperance, who goes by Tempest as some cheesy sort of rebellion. or- of you're REALLY bored and don't mind pranking your kids for life- you can name twins Tempest and Temperance. and they'll hate you, once they know what words mean, lol.anyway though, wdyt of Tempest? usable? prefer Storm? what would you combo it with?* hah get it, warming, storm, hah get it. get it. get it--------https://www.behindthename.com/pnl/180731/115070 my pnl

Tempest is an awesome name, much better than Storm.

The 'pest' part is not attractive to my ears. Storm is nicer, it just has a better sound and Stormy is cuter than Tempy or anything else you could come up with for Tempest. I would pair it with something classic. Tempest Aurelia, Tempest Victoria etc.

Storm's better than Tempest. I don't like Storm much, but Tempest just makes me think of someone throwing a tantrum. And of pests. And tea-pots. It has a pompous vibe because it's not an ordinarily used word, and because it's vaguely some kind of threat - don't make Tempest angry ...? and because people might have just forgotten what it means. The most ... temp?Storm as a name though, just makes me think of metaphorical emotional intensity or unpredictability, which I guess some people think is sexy, so it's like a "sexy" name. Like Velvet or Rebel or Dream.Temperance is one of the more name-y "not-that" virtues IMO, it's about like Patience or Prudence. Not remotely my style - I think the namiest virtues are positive, like Amity and Liberty and Verity. But it's not shushy like Chastity or Silence or Modesty. I don't like the sounds in Temperance very much - I hear "prance." Meh, it's ok though. I'd rather Temperance than Tempest any day. I'd struggle to choose whether Temperance or Storm is better. These names as first names seem really hard to make combos with.

"it's not too shushy"- yeah, that's what i appreciate so much about Temperance over other virtue names. teaches restraint, without coming off as shaming or shushing. i dislike the -ity endings of those other names though, that sounds far less namelike.and i get those reasons why Tempest is so unappealing, though it doesn't come off like any of that to me. Storm i can also see as appealing for those reasons, but the obvious metaphor and the "sexiness" of it was part of my dislike, i now realize. i guess that angle is a bit corny to me.

I think Tempest is usable and probably more usable than Storm. I think Tempest sounds like a better name than Temperance.

I used to have Tempest on my list, but I was always a bit unsure because the -pest ending pretty much sounds like pissed in my accent. I was thinking about adding it again, as I often get it suggested to me to go with my favourites/ideal sibset, and I wouldn’t actually use it because it clashes with some top names. I agree that Tempest doesn’t just feel destructive and loud, there’s a sense of calm and thoughtfulness about her, it does feel quite poetic in a way. I actually don’t find Storm that negative. I know it is, really, but I used to imagine a quiet little boy called Storm somehow, and it reminds me of the X-Men character, which is a positive in my opinion.

TEMPISSED IS SUCH A GOOD WORD. a storm but a PISSED one.also i completely forgot about the character. i keep meaning to get more into comics.

I’m not into the comics at all, just the films. I’d love to get into comics in general, but there’s so much I wouldn’t know where to start haha.

I love Storm, but it does make me think more of Storm from the X-Men than actual storms. And that's a positive association, imo.I also like Tempest. I've had an original character called Tempest for many years.
I was actually disappointed when I finally read Shakespeare's The Tempest because I expected better after just the name.
Tempest to me is the name that I associate with being steadfast and driven and a force to be reckoned with.I'm not a fan of Temperance at all.
With the exception of the character Temperance Brennan, the name does sound like Too Much™.
And Tempest as a nn doesn't make sense to me.

The sound is great, but the meaning isn’t. Storm isn’t the best, meaning-wise (and it’s awful, sound-wise) but at least “storm” can apply to a friendly summer shower as well as a dangerous weather phenomenon. Temperance has a nice sound, too, but it sounds preachy. It’s like Chastity in that it also sets her up for almost inevitable “failure” in a society like ours, and susequent jokes about that failure. A strong personality will be able to see the jokes for what they are, but an insecure person could interpret it as ridicule.

that's very true. i wouldn't use Temperance for that reason- as great a virtue as it is, you have to get angry sometimes, and the bearer will inevitably have to put up with reminders about the irony. which might be extra annoying when it's in response to her being angry, and so feel very belittling. many people may not even realize what the word means, though.Chastity though is a whole new level. that's not even a virtue you can explain to a little kid (or well, what most Christian moms would be willing to explain), so she'll have to wait what, 12 years to know what her own name means? and once she and her peers know, it's so embarrassing, it reminds everyone who meets her about exactly what the word warns against. she'll think about and hear about it far more than she would if she weren't named that.

I don't find anything attractive about either Storm or Tempest. They just aren't names to me; and I think you have to stretch quite a bit to find a way to link the words with positive human qualities. I mean, tempestuous isn't a positive trait in a person, most would agree; most people would feel like they were always walking on eggs around a tempestuous person. There was an actress on the Cosby Show whose name was Tempestt (that spelling) Bledsoe. So there is a small precedent. Also, in the old days, there was a famous burlesque queen (read: stripper) who used the name Tempest Storm.

Sorry, supposed to be under OP!Can't say I like any of them. Tempest ends with "pest", Storm makes me think of Operation Desert Storm and both names makes me think of someone who is angry all the time.
I would rather use a name from The Tempest, like Prospero or Miranda.
I used to like Temperance, but all of a sudden I started to think that it sounded way too...I don't know, chaste?

I don't like the PEST bit of Tempest. Storm is better in my opinion. Temperance is annoyingly virtuous to me.

agree on Temperance ...It doesn't even sound pleasant, like some of the other virtue names like Joy or Hope.
And it doesn't sound realistic; the character Temperance Brenna is, I think, the only reason it's getting any use at all these days.
