[Opinions] Kai and Gerda
What do you think of Kai for a boy and Gerda for a girl?I read 'The Snow Queen' and these are the names of the main characters.Kai is pronounced KY and Gerda sounds more like GEHR-da (I watched the movie afterwards and I think the story was written in Danish originally).

In a German-language environment, I like them both very much. Or, presumably, a Danish one, but outside Denmark there don't seem to be any, for practical purposes. I wouldn't use them myself, as I've got no ancestral/cultural links and there are way too many English names I'd use first. But they are good.

Yeah, that fairy tale was written by famed Danish author, Hans Christian Andersen. In Danish Kai is named Kay, pronounced as KY as you also said. Gerda the same as you said also. That said, both Kai and Gerda are very dated in Denmark, as in you'll rarely see people born after the 1950s named it. For my generation, I was born in 1977, it's what our parents and grandparents and earlier generations were named as given names. I don't care for them at all.Well, I do like Kai in other origins and meanings, like in the Chinese and the Hawaiian ways. But that's also it.

Kai is a favorite, certainly prefer it on a boy but I like it for a girl too. Gerda seems a bit old to me. Also not sure if I like the Ger/kher- sound.

Kai is knightly, handsome, and definitely usable. Gerda is a bit of a clunker and seems harsher when paired with Kai.

I like Kai. I know several guys with this name and I how it's very to the point/no-nonsense. Kai is youthful to me and I know adults with this name, but not anyone over 50.
Gerda is dated and stale to me. I also know people with this name, but I don't think it's an attractive name at all.

I know a Kai; he's Finnish. Pronounced kye. It's OK, not a favorite.
Gerda is pronounced yair-da in Swedish and I prefer that pronounciation to GEHR-da. But I don't really care fo the name; it's so old-fashioned.
