Hi !!!
I recently saw the anime 'Fairy Tail' and I was thinking about names.
Some of them are translated in many different ways.
I give you few examples...
ジュビア Jubia (Japanese) is translated as Juvia (English) and Lluvia (Italian).
ジェラール Jerāru (Japanese) is translated as Jellal (English) and
Gerard (Italian)
エルザ Eruza (Japanese) is translated as Erza (English) and
Elsa (Italian)
ウルティア Urutia (Japanese) is translated as Ultear (English) and Urrutia (Italian)
ラクサス Rakusasu (Japanese) is translated as Laxus (English) and Luxus (Italian)
ルーシィ Rūshi is translated as
Lucy everywhere
My question is..
How is possible to know from Kanji what possible name to use? If I have a Urutia, a Rakusasu or a Jerāru I would never guess something like Ultear, Laxus or Jellal.
Italians did a good work with Lluvia that in Spanish means
Rain as the character can control rain. Luxus is also quite good because 'lux' is light in Latin and this character uses lightnings and
Elsa is great because It is similar to the original form but also means 'hilt (of a sword)' as the character is a skilled fencer.
I know that R could be an L and that Japanese needs always wovels in its syllables but...aren't the translations top elaborated and far from the original spelling?
Or it is the contrary: a Japanese mangaka thought that a character name would be
Elsa or
Lucy and he tried to make them in Japanese so using Eruza and Rushi?
Aren't in Japan any rules about spelling Japanese and foreign names clearly?
What is your opinion about what I said?
