It sounds a bit like “sell ma,” like your trying to sell your mother. I prefer Thelma or Velma.

Zelma, Salma, Anselma are all cute. I wouldn't use Selma, that spelling, because it does remind me of racism, even though it's associated with Civil Rights.

The only Selma I've ever known was a very old lady when I was very young! And her family were originally German. There's nothing actually wrong with the name, but for some reason I much prefer Thelma.

I brought this up one time and people immediately thought of Selma, Alabama. It's a little bit too political for me to use, even though I really like it

Selma, Alabama was the site of one of the biggest civil rights marches. It was quite violent. Look up the movie Selma.There is nothing wrong about it but I would feel uneasy using it. It's so tied to the Civil Rights movement and that era, neither of which I have connection to.

It's always felt sort of incomplete to me. Probably because it feels like it should be short for Anselma or something like that.
