Help[Opinions] Just saw a Facebook BA...
...for a little boy named Alucard. Yes, that's 'Dracula' spelled backwards. Yes, someone gave that name to a human child. They're calling him Luca.
I'd say I can't believe it, but I've been here long enough that unfortunately I can believe anything when it comes to names. But, wow.

So...like the character from Castlevania? How is it any different than naming your child after any other fandom-based obsession? It's not a bad name and when spoken it does feel like it's of the older, elegant type - like Vincent or Alphonse versus just being Dracula spelled backwards - though it may not age well. Probably would have fit better in the the 1910s vs. the 2010s but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I actually love the way Alucard sounds. It feels like it should already be a name — Norman or something. I like it.

I think it's a very elegant name, I didn't realize it's Dracula spelled backwards as I only recognize it as the Castlevania character (which isn't a bad association imo because he's very handsome lol) but learning that doesn't put me off from the name.
And regarding the nickname, I don't think it's fair to criticize "why didn't they just use that as the first name if they wanted to call him Luca" because I've seen a fair amount of people use seemingly random nns and no one batted an eye at those, while this nn is actually derived from the name.

Alucard looks like you should add a v on the beginning of it, put in an apostrophe, and have a Valu'card, which gives you discounts on things you wouldn't ever actually want to buy.

Luckily it isn't as in-your-face as actually using Dracula. Luca is an okay nickname, but I just don't understand that if people would want to call their child Luca, why they don't just name him Luca. Alucard sort of has a surname vibe to it. I don't like it, but it definitely not in the top 10 worst names I've seen personally either.

This might not be a case of "lol lets spell Dracula backwards". Maybe they like the character in Castlevania, or Hellsing, or any of the other pieces of media that have used the name. Sure, Dracula-backwards is how the creators of those things got the name, but now there's ~more~ to it than just being Back-ula.

Maybe they have the same idea as all the people who complain that Nevaeh "really" means "hell" because it's "heaven" spelled backwards. That's not a logical conclusion, but many people have that emotional reaction.
Not to my taste, but I think he'll actually have many less problems in life being named Alucard than if he had been named Dracula.

Why didn't they choose simply Vlad? It is very tied with Dracula and it's his real and historical name. That's would be perfect, better than Alucard "Luca" because Vlad is a legitimate name too!
Also I would suggest them Draco or Drake or even Drago, Dragoș and Dragos (both "dragon" via Italian/Latin and a diminutive of Dragan "precious" in Slavic).
They had the chance to use the Dracula tie with a lot of "mainstream" names...why going by Alucard? TT

Obviously the parents themselves aren't completely comfortable with what they did; if they really thought it was a great idea to name a kid Dracula (either backward or forward) they'd call him that and wouldn't fall back on the legitimate Luca. They know they're doing wrong and they're trying to Cover Their Butts.
