I know it's a surname, and I really don't want to like it, but I can't help myself. If it matters any, it would be because of Nathaniel Hawthorne, and I would probably use it as only a MN. I used Julian Hawthorne in a CAF, and I think I like it.

So:
1. What do you think of Hawthorne?
2. What about Julian Hawthorne?
3. Combos?

As a middle name, I think it would be pretty darn cool. I'm a fan of Nathaniel Hawthorne and I picked apart Scarlet Letter and scrutinised every last bit of it. Fantastic book. I would definitely consider bestowing his surname on my child in homage.

Julian Hawthorne is very handsome.

I like Alexander Hawthorne, but I would never give it to my child just because it would be cruel and unusual to expect a five year old to write out Alexander Hawthorne Bartholomew (LN). lol Thanks, though, it's a great combo.

I also like Milo and Calvin with it! :)

I think it's an awesome mn.

Hawthorne is a common name in my city (Portland, Oregon) as it's the name of a major street, a bridge, a park, and a trendy neighborhood. It's hard for me to think of it as a person's name. It's not the worst I've heard though -- I usually approve of tree/nature names.

Thanks. I hope that we wouldn't encounter a location with that name, but if the kid has it first, it wouldn't bother me lol!

1. What do you think of Hawthorne? Love it! It's a guilty pleasure of mine. I go back and forth whether I prefer the spelling Hawthorn or Hawthorne.

2. What about Julian Hawthorne? Very nice!

That's how I feel about it. It's a guilty pleasure, but I want to add it as a normal name to my list! I couldn't spell it without the E, though, because the whole reason I love it is for the author, who actually added the E himself to distance his name from his grandfather's, who had been a prominent judge during the witch trials.

I think it's nice, particularly as a middle name.

People use surnames as first or middle names all the time (i.e. Palmer, Parker, Cooper, MacKenzie... there are so many).

I think Hawthorne is really attractive sounding for a middle name--it's distinguished. As a first name, it would be pretentious, but in the middle, it works out.

Julian Hawthorne is nice--a very serviceable name, overall. How about...

The only downside is that it's pronunced HAW-thorn, whereas I'd like it to be pronunced HAA-thorn (HAA as in "hat")! I'd find it utterly fantastic if there was another name out there pronunced HAA-thorn, but Hathorne just looks a bit incomplete. :( Woe.
